As a young child I, myself, had a difficult time staying seated at a desk for hours at a time. As a first year teacher last year I noticed many of my students having the same issue. This caused them to become distracted and took them out of the learning environment. After researching several ideas, I believe flexible seating is the answer. Flexible seating has many benefits. It gives the students a sense of control over their learning environment. It allows each student to choose where they work and where they work best. Each student will get to choose a seat like wobble chairs, bean bags, lap desk lawn chairs, and several other alternate seating options. This allows them to share space with others and allows them different seating options. I believe that with flexible seating in my classroom this will allow my students to be less distracted and disruptive, providing a better learning environment for all students. With the options available they will be able to lean, twist, kneel, stand and even fidget!
