The coronavirus pandemic hit my students and their families hard. Like everyone around the world, our physical classroom had to be transformed into a digital one in a weekend. As we all know, a digital classroom only works if you have access to a computer and the Internet. Only half of my students have access to a computer and therefore had a really hard time participating in many of the digital activities located within our Google classroom. The students that do have access to a computer at home still had trouble participating in all activities because they were competing with siblings and parents to use it for their school and work assignments. This may not seem like a problem to most general education teachers/students because of the ability to assign activities and schedule live video chats to their students with flexible time frames. However, my unique group of special education students really require a strict schedule that is followed both in and out of the classroom. By helping me provide my students with their own personal Chromebook you will be directly involved with making sure some of the best kids on the planet continue to get the education they deserve and have the same access to digital/online curriculum as their peers. These Chromebooks will continue to be used daily in the physical classroom (once things return to normal) to encourage a plethora of other skills (both daily and vocational skills) that will help my students as they transition out of high school and into jobs and adult living.
