In the teaching of reading and language arts, research proves that small group instruction, explicitly tailored to each student's needs, is effective. A small group table is one of the best tools to accomplish this. A small group table allows the teacher to have full focus on between 1 and 6 students and to engage them in activities that address specific needs and allows the teacher to administer differentiated instruction. A small group table such as this also allows for a relatively small footprint, saving space in a classroom where space for diverse activities is a must. Currently, I only have one small rectangular table that only fits four students plus the teacher. It does not allow the teacher to keep full focal attention on students and their work. In contrast, the half-round construction of the small group table is ideal for differentiated instruction for up to 6 students.
