Having a meeting place in the art classroom positively supports students as they engage in the artistic processes of creating, responding, and presenting their artwork. At the start of art class students and I have a quick meeting to learn about what we are doing for the day and why this is important. This meeting is often accompanied by a demo of an artistic skill or process, and students must gather closely to see it unfold. During class students often seek out feedback from their peers about how their artwork is developing through informal meetings and a feedback protocol. At the end of a project students will often share what they have made with one another and explain its significance. Through adding this rug to my classroom, my students will have a clearly specified location to meet, receive feedback, and present and celebrate their finished pieces of artwork. They will also be able to engage in several other community-building activities that require an open floor space in order to be successful. My students have already shown an amazing ability to communicate as artists do, and I know this space will only further their development of both communication skills and the artistic processes.
