Can you recall a time where you had to sit in a very uncomfortable chair for a long meeting or conference? Did you find yourself agitated because you could not get comfortable? Those feelings are quite common for most of my 3rd grade students. as they try to stay engaged in learning throughout the day. Flexible seating would encourage my students to find their best spot to stay focused, calm, and productive. The learning environment has a direct impact on student achievement. Flexible seating allows students to rock, wobble, lean, and bounce, which increases oxygen flow to their brain, keeping them alert and focused. Flexible seating also requires students to constantly use higher order thinking skills, such as conflict resolution. It also develops patience and turn-taking for a generation that only knows instant gratification. These flexible seating options would be used all throughout the day, and students will have the opportunity to change their seat if they feel it isn't the best option for them.
