As students enter the room each day, they will begin their morning routine. Put their folders away, hand in homework, make their lunch choice, and last but not least, choose their seating spot for the day. They may choose to sit at a traditional desk. No frills, no flexible seating option, and that is a-okay. However, some may decide that the window that their desk looks out to is too distracting, and will pick to sit on a yoga mat with a lap desk. Some may realize that they didn't take their medicine that morning and know that if they don't move they will go crazy, so they will choose a wobble seat. Some may decide that they don't need a lot of support, but that a bouncy band seat will be just enough to keep their feet busy and mind focused. Our future leaders deserve the opportunity to make choices. They need to learn how to problem solve, deal with conflict, and discover. Flexible seating does just this. It allows students to discover how they learn best. It gives them the opportunity to see that maybe sitting by their best friend isn't the greatest idea. It helps them learn that they may not always get their way and how to handle it when they don't. It is important to help children develop these skills while they are young so they are prepared for the world in the future. You and I did not grow up with these opportunities so it may seem odd to allow students to make these choices, however, research shows that giving students the power of choice, while also implementing movement, helps student focus. Please help me provide this opportunity to these future leaders.
