Our school was affected by Hurricane Harvey. Our young life skills students have different needs than most of the general education students. They require special equipment and materials to help them access their environment and to give them coping devices for whatever their disabilities may be. I have seen how having the equipment needed for these students can make a positive impact on their education. I have students who are not stable enough to sit in a student chair without assistance, so a table that sits low enough to the ground, where the students can sit on a cushion, will give them small group table time with their peers. When given the time to choose an independent activity, the flex-space table will be available to any student to sit and work, not just the more physically able. Since they are small, having shelving they can easily access will give them a chance for more independence. Every student will be able to reach any materials. These students need to feel secure, so a "how to hug" chair gives them that sense of security while sitting in circle time, and the weighted blanket gives those children with autism the bodily pressure they need. The items in this project will be an enrichment to the classroom and allow these students to grow.
