The main reasons for my project is because I want to instill and foster a love for reading and writing through providing a well rounded classroom library. Novels with protagonists of all walks of life will allow my students to gain a broader perspective on different cultures, backgrounds, and life. I want to also add decor to my classroom that is calming and inspiring rather than institutional or elementary, not that either is negative, but I teach seniors in a low income and tough location in Salt Lake Valley. Many of them go home to difficult, loud, or less than motivating environments. I want to provide a safe haven for my students that encourages quiet reading time -- this can help them to be introspective and connected to the text when diving into a writing assignment later in the lessons. The way a student feels in the classroom can actually assist them in their focus and motivation! Many of my seniors are of different backgrounds: Hispanic, Asian, African American, physically disabled, Special Education, LGBTQ+, and so much more. Since I have a diverse group of students and school demographic, the books I have selected are a variety of mediums (novels, graphic novels, poetry) that is bound to find a place in a student's hand during silent reading time and at home reading time. The multitude of topics and mediums are sure to keep students engaged in the reading but also will help other non-readers to find a genre that they actually enjoy reading. This will foster the love of reading in more students, therefore raising reading and comprehension skills. Due to the diversity in the book selection, there's a story for most everyone and will allow my students to expand their cultural understanding and appreciation. Thank you for reading!
