I read about a book club, Project Lit Bronx, and became inspired! It’s a community book club where students, teachers, parents, community members, and alumni are invited to read young adult novels (one every other month) and then get together to talk about them. Students get involved in choosing the novels to read and will help lead discussions. Project Lit has gained momentum throughout the country because of its ability to help get kids enthusiastic about reading! Honestly, we all know that the digital age has taken away students’ desire to take the slow process to read a book. However, they NEED that ability to slow down, to discuss their thoughts in person with others, to be heard. Ideally, this will be the first of many books. My students need 25 copies of A Wrinkle in Time. My hope is that 25 will be too few and people will need to pass them around. The teacher from Project Lit Bronx recommended starting with 50 copies of the book, but our school is smaller and our community is tight. I’m sure we can get people to share.
