Students start the year writing a personal narrative. To assist them in their writing, and to encourage their reading of different genres, this project is comprised of many different autobiographies, biographies, memoirs, and essays. My classroom is diverse in a number of ways including race, interests, socio-economic status, religion, and a multitude of other factors. The books included in this list are meant to be as diverse as my students. The students will choose and read one of the books, and along with the in-class lessons about personal narratives, will write their own personal narrative encompassing different techniques they have learned about and read in their chosen book.
