Mentor Sentences is an integrative approach to teaching vocabulary and grammar that will be used all year long. With this collection of picture books, each week my students will get to listen to a high quality, intentionally chosen mentor text. We will study a well-crafted sentence together and students will imitate craft moves of published authors. Students will have the opportunity to illustrate their sentences to connect meaning, and we will use these writing samples to create class books that will be placed in our classroom library. Teaching with mentor texts helps instill the importance of reading and encourages students to write like the authors they love. All of the books in this project are chosen with specific lessons in mind that will allow my students to work with the text in a tangible way. This process will nurture my students' love for reading and writing, all while exploring grammar and vocabulary in a way that's meaningful to them.
