The materials needed for this project will be used in a multitude of ways and with a variety of grade levels. Students will be able to use Legos in order to build a concrete basis to form a more conceptual understanding of various math topics. For example, in grades K-2 students will begin to have a greater understanding of the quantity of numbers, an understanding of addition facts, and the creation of shapes through the use of Legos and creative, hands on activities. Student in grades 3-5 will use Legos to have a deeper understanding of area and perimeter along with multiplication and division facts. Students in all grade levels will use Legos to form a concrete understanding of mathematical standards appropriate for their grade level. They will experience this using Legos as a concrete model and then extend their knowledge by using Legos to demonstrate and apply their mathematical skills in a real world application task. Students will be able to use the materials in a wide range of settings. In the Math Specialists classroom for students needing specialized instruction to support their math learning. Teachers within the building will be able to use these materials during their Math Workshop time to enhance students hands on learning and exploration. These materials will also be used in our upcoming Math Night to show families and community members ways we can work together to encourage and support math learning at home, school, and in the community.
