My students are very unique like all children. They do have the added burden of Autism Spectrum Disorder. When you walk into my classroom, you may see a kindergartner being praised for using the potty independently, a 1st grader working at his work station on independent work jobs and a couple 2nd graders working at the big table in a reading group with me. My students are mostly non-verbal, ranging from kindergarten to 3rd grade. My classroom is considered self-contained, meaning my students do not need to leave my room for anything, but that is not the case. The public K-5th grade school that I teach at embraces my students and the general education teachers and their peers expect their friends, my students, to be in their classroom everyday. The school is a wonderful environment for special needs children and typically developing children because it fosters tolerance, understanding and patience. My students are the youngest and most severe autism needs in the city.
