Mathematic literacy is a foundational skill for civic engagement. We know that a math-literate student is more likely to be successful in their high school and college experiences, thus posing them for a prosperous professional career. Unfortunately, by fifth grade, many students have relegated themselves to learners who are just "not good at math." We know that if students believe in their ability to succeed, they will rise to the occasion and pursue life-long learning. This project proposes to fill our fifth grade learning community with math tools that will challenge students' perceptions of math as they understand it thus far. Manipulatives offer students the ability to engage with math concepts visually and tactilely which guarantees multiple ways conceptualize numerical relationships. Additionally, the games included in this project provide opportunities for students to collaborate and compete with one another. When students engage with educational content through play, they are more likely to associate positive feelings with learning and retain the information in a more permanent and dynamic manner.
