Not all students learn best and easiest in a traditional seating arrangement. The idea of sitting for 6 hours at a hard, metal desk is, to many students, constrictive and prohibitive. Some students need to be on their feet, some students need a frequent change of position, and some students need to be relaxed and comfortable to think and learn freely. If I provided a standup desk option in my classroom, those students who are fidgety and have difficulty staying seated could feel empowered to do and learn in a position that allows them classroom control. Also, breaking up the traditional set up of rows of desks or formatted tables allow for student collaboration and frequent change of collaborative groups. Flexible seating encourages children to make responsible decisions about where and how to work. Sometimes my students just need to fidget, wobble, stand, sit, relax or kneel to get comfortable so they can focus on the instruction I am providing. Providing alternative seating like beanbags and lap desks allow them to move and think freely. My goal is to offer my students a classroom in which traditional seating has been replaced with a warm, inviting atmosphere that gives them a degree of choice and a sense of power in everyday learning.
