Boys to Men Book Study project will place 3 paperback novels into every student's hand within my Special Education classroom. The book study will begin with Hatchet by Gary Paulson, an action packed novel about a 12 year old boy who tries to survive in the wilderness alone. The Boys to Men Book Study transitions to The Bully by Paul Langan. This novel is about a 9th grade young man who transfers schools in the middle of the school year and learns how to deal with a school bully. The Boys to Men Book Study project concludes with Divergent by Veronica Roth. Divergent is centered around 16 year olds proclaiming their "faction" in society, surviving initiations, and becoming young men and women, with or against the odds. As you can see, the Boys to Men Book Study project provides my classroom of students, comprised of 87% males with special needs, a year long literary journey geared toward their interests, real life decision making, survival, and conflict resolution. In addition, these novels provide "social stories" my students can relate to and learn from.
