When I first began teaching, I taught in an all African-American school. I realized early on that a huge disservice was being done in these schools. Did the previous educators simply give up or was the curriculum not rigorous enough? I will never know the answer to why not one of the middle school students I taught knew what the Civil Rights Movement was. It was part of the curriculum so what was the problem? Perhaps the way it was delivered was not reaching the students. I am using this past experience to enhance my teaching now. The novels we have access to at my school are, for lack of a better word, boring to the students. I would like the opportunity to teach my students about the oppression that has not only been felt by African Americans but most cultures across the world. I want to use "To Kill A Mockingbird" to not only teach literary skills but to open a discussion about adversity and discrimination around the world. To enhance this unit on "To Kill A Mockingbird" I would use a document camera to model close reading, show primary resources from various world struggles and for many other things. The document camera will not only help with this unit, but it will help enhance my teaching in general.
