Do you remember sitting in small plastic chairs while leaning on a cold wooden desk with metal legs? You probably sat in an alphabetized seating chart and always ended up next to the most distracting student or in the back of the class because your last name started with an S. Well those days are long gone! Research has shown students need movement and they need to be given choices. The students who come to me are not just an alphabetized list. They are unique individuals with various learning styles. My classroom is not a one size fits all! Flexible seating does not mean no desks. Flexible seating means that students choose to sit on a stability ball while at a desk. It allows for students to spread out on the floor with a lap desk. It also allows the teacher to move around and have space to talk with students while they are working. Flexible seating is needed in my classroom to ensure ALL of my third graders are empowered and take charge of their learning. My students need flexible seating to empower them to take personal responsibility for their learning. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they best learn from. It improves collaboration among peers, sensory input, and overall sense of well-being. In my class students are treated as individuals with individual needs, not as an alphabetized list. Thank you for choosing to help fund this project. Your donations are greatly appreciated and will be well used by my third-grade class.
