My 7th and 8th graders are learning how to be good citizens through both civic education and social-emotional learning. They learn about the juvenile justice system through Play by the Rules. They learn about how government work with We the People and then they will learn how to make changes as citizens through the Project Citizen program. My students will engage with content and with each other through supplemental civic lessons as well as indoor and outdoor games and activities. When students feel that they are part of a community in the classroom, they feel more engaged & secure, leading to more confident students and stronger citizens. My project includes various games, art supplies and PPE to ensure both an engaging as well as safe classroom. Card games and board games teach students how to follow rules, how to win and lose gracefully, and give the students an opportunity to socialize with each other. Outdoor activities are used to build social skills as well give my students the opportunity to have some physical education since most of them missed that last year during distance education. Art supplies and civics lesson books will provide me with some engaging activities to bring Civic education to life for the students. The wipes and Kleenex will be used to ensure that my students stay healthy & the classroom stays as clean as possible to help bring this pandemic to an end. I hope that by learning about each other through non-threatening lessons and activities, the class will become a more safe and fun environment where students will want to participate and continue to grow.
