Do you remember reading a book where you completely related to the character? Do you remember reading a book that opened your mind to a person's life that was completely different from your own? These are the connections and eye opening moments I desire for my students. I might have Junie B Jones, Ramona Quimby, or Nate the Great books, however, where are the books with characters of color? Where are the books that talk about autism? Where are the books that expose kids to different homes, traditions, families, or struggles? This is what my classroom so desperately needs. Books that are diverse! Whether it's reading a book as a read aloud, discussing a book in a small group setting, or giving kids time to read a book independently, it is my job as their teacher to provide literacy that connects with each student in my classroom. These books are a great start to accomplishing this goal.
