Taking over the worst performing school in New Orleans has been a rewarding challenge that has seen both my students and I grow over the first month of school. Amidst whatever struggles my students may face outside of school, they take solace in books when they enter my classroom for literacy instruction. My students have taken to reading in such a way that we've gotten into trouble for taking too many books out of the library. Like clockwork, I received deliveries from friends and family members sending me whatever children's books they are willing to part with. Yet, this is just the beginning. With varied levels and tastes along with the amount of time we spend reading, my students will collectively read thousands and thousands of books this school year. My students' fervor for reading must be commended. Their reward? More books.
