While teaching in a classroom where I had access to a microphone and speakers, I noticed that even on those warm afternoons, I was better able to hold students' attention when I used my microphone. At a professional development class, we were told that simply using a classroom microphone can increase what students retain from our teaching. I would like to give my class the opportunity to focus on instruction with greater ease by providing a small speaker attached to an assistive listening receiver at each table group (6 total) in the classroom. I (or whoever is leading discussion) will wear a transmitter. An assistive listening system will benefit all students, but it will be especially helpful for my students who are easily distractable, who are learning English as another language, and students who have mild hearing imparments.
