These engaging books will get students excited about reading! People of color, both authors and characters, are vastly underrepresented in many classrooms and school libraries. If we want students to get interested in reading, they must have books available by and about people they can identify with. The books for this project are at a range of reading levels, from picture books to intermediate chapter books so that all of my students can find books to read at their own level.
These books will be available to students in our classroom library for independent reading in school or at home, but I will also be using many of the books as read-aloud to teach and initiate classroom discussions. The Youngest Marcher is a story of hope and bravery about how children helped fight for equality during the Civil Rights movement. This book can be used to teach history, but also to highlight innovative ways that people have fought for justice. While students will get lost on their own in moving stories like The Crossover, a novel in verse by the great Kwame Alexander, it can also be used to teach elements of poetry to the entire class. These books will benefit students in countless ways for years to come!
