Many students have more energy and fewer opportunities to move at school. They are inundated with information and overstimulated by technology, which causes them anxiety. In our classroom of six and seven year olds, students benefit from practicing mindful movements and brain focusing exercises. By funding this project, students will be able to exercise their minds and bodies outside the walls of the classroom! Children will learn to regulate their emotions as well as focus their attention outside the walls of the classroom. With the exercise mats requested, we can do our lessons outdoors where others can see what we're doing and we can absorb the benefits of nature. Each lesson helps students focus their awareness of what is happening in the present moment without judgement. They will balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain. They will strengthen their hearts and lungs and create more peace of mind. They will learn to witness their emotions and situations with curiosity and compassion. Students will engage in activities that focus their awareness on their bodies, thoughts, breath, sounds, and environmental surroundings in strategically designed lessons. Practicing mindful movements outside reduces the stress students store in their bodies and minds, freeing them to be happier, calmer, and empowered to be the best version of themselves. They will learn to notice and expand the space between stimulus and response so they can choose a response as opposed to reacting.
