The use of Legos in our classroom will give students the opportunity to work together through play, foster their social and creative skills, and develop their problem solving and spacial awareness cognition. As schools across the country are getting rid of nap time and recess, and kids are spending less time socializing with peers, playing outside, and working cooperatively with others. I am seeing deficits in social skills, problem solving behaviors, and creativity because students are spending an alarming amount of time on YouTube, TV, and tablets instead of learning how kids learn best....through play! We would love to have a classroom set of Legos and Garden Park Building Block parts to use during our Centers time to try to fill in those learning gaps! Legos and Blocks would also allow our students to work on STEM objective skills. The students that I work with come from high poverty and trauma-related situations. They are always so excited to have nice things in our classroom to use, as many of them do not have a lot of toys or books at home to use.
