With as many as 30 students in the classroom, there are a wide range of abilities and interests when it comes to their academics, and most importantly their reading skills. I have requested each book title as a set of five. This will allow me to keep my small groups at 4 students each. "Guided reading gives students the chance to apply the strategies they already know to new text" (Scholastic News 2018). As the teacher, it is my job to provide the support to students through guided reading, which will eventually lead them to become independent readers. Although we have books provided for us through our Language Arts curriculum, it does not meet the needs of all my students, specifically those who are reading below grade level. The selected texts are meant to help close that gap for my struggling readers.
