When the body is allowed to move freely, the brain is more receptive to knowledge. Asking a 5 or 6 year old to sit completely still is not developmentally appropriate to stimulate brain growth.
My students need wobble chairs, portable lap desk, floor cushions, wobble chair cushions, and chair fidget bands for their busy little bodies. When a child's body is in motion, the brain is more receptive for learning. Offering a student a chair that is less restrictive for their natural body movement will allow the brain to ignite and the learning to take place. Having alternative seating in my classroom is a simple method that will foster a learning environment. I am excited to see the changes and growth for my students by offering various types of seats. I would like to have: bands for the chair legs to allow foot movement without disturbing their peer across from them (especially for my mainstreamed autistic students), various forms of floor seating for the student who wants to work independently, and stools that rock for the students who choose to sit at a table. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read about my classroom need.
