What’s great about a Scholastic magazine such as Scope is that it provides high interest, engaging articles that students are willing to read closely, debate topics that are connected to their experiences, and build their comprehension, writing, and speaking skills. Using round table discussions, blogging, Socratic seminars and classroom debates, students, for one week each month of the school year, will use Scope Magazine resources at least one week a month to develop their comprehension skills, meet language arts standards, and develop a love for reading. Reading high-interest, relevant fiction and nonfiction articles, participating in round table discussions and blogging about different topics and issues across all content areas and genres will promote a love for reading. Throughout the year, I will challenge them to read and make claims about the text based on what the text is saying and their personal experiences. I will provide mini-lessons showing them how their group and class discussions are the same responses expected of them on district and state tests. By the end of the year, students will see reading as a part of their life experiences, see texts that can provide a variety of levels of understanding when read closely, and feel confident about their reading abilities when assessed at the district and state levels.
