Our 6th Grade students will work on a series of projects throughout the year that are not only connected to each other, but to the families of our small, rural community. The first project is an essay titled "Proud to Be American". Within the essay, each student will be asked to reflect, then express how we have obtained our freedoms and our opportunities that are avialable to us. The Veterans Day Appreciation luncheon is the exact moment where our students graciously, wholeheartedly and personally thank each of our local veterans with a handshake and dessert. After being personally invited through a letter in the mail, the veterans respond to let us know if they accept or not. Each veteran is also given the opportunity to list any ranks, accomplishments or even a personal story they would like to share with others. Once the students receive the responses and we have our numbers of atendees, the lunceon planning begins. Our requests are simply to spruce up the looks of the ceremony itself. The program is set up in our vast cafeteria, so we are hoping the bunting can break up the large, plain walls a little bit. As for the pens, well, after all of the introductions, singing, story-telling and desserts, we like to send the veterans off with a token of appreciation. As a staff, we thought the "God Bless America" pen would be a useful and practical token. Along with the pen, each student will also present their personally invited veteran with the "Proud to Be American" essay on FREEDOM, written earlier in the year. It is a truly heartwarming experience and it is simply amazing how much meaning and insight it fuels into our Washington DC trip the following week. Thank You
