Reading is such an important skill for students to have, especially in first grade. My aim this school year is to have pencils, markers, crayons, highlighters and sentence strips for each student. The pencils, markers, crayons and highlighters are for the students to mark up their texts. I always teach my students to circle or underline the important information from the text. The students read the text through the first time and use one color or a pencil to circle and underline what they believe is important. They will then read the questions attached. Now the students will go back and find the answers with different colors for each question. Comprehension and vocabulary are important skills as well. The sentence strips will be used to help them work on vocabulary skills. They will cut the strips in half. The word will be written on one half and the definition or example will be on the other half. Students will go around the room quizzing one another while learning the materials. The sentence strips will also be use to answer questions about the text.
