My students will need to learn about plant parts, plant life cycles, and the flow of energy as part of the fourth grade California State Standards. My students will also need to learn about decomposers, food chains, and food webs. In addition to the aforementioned areas, I also want to teach my students about responsibility and sustainability. I want to give them real examples of how their choices impact the future. I know that having an aquaponics system in our class will be a memorable opportunity for my 9 and 10-year-old students to actively be involved in their own learning in science this year. With this requested AquaSprouts Garden and wheat seeds, my students will make sure it runs properly and maintain the system. This will engage a sense of ownership and responsibility in their learning and in our class community. The AquaSprouts Garden is a self-sustaining aquaponics system and students will be able to grow and observe the wheat grass as it grows. By learning about how the aquaponics system works, my students will see and be engaged in firsthand experiences about plant growth, fertilization, plant parts, a plant life cycle, and the flow of energy within the plant cycle. My students will become masters of the literacy behind the science we will study, and I cannot wait to teach them all about our aquaponics system.
