Sensory processing is something that we often think little about but this can be a major concern for our students with Autism. They are constantly faced with overwhelming stimulation from the environment and need ways to regulate their body's response. For example, walking into a new place, using the bathroom or sitting at a desk can cause anxiety which leads to a lack in focus. This makes it difficult for our students to reach their academic potential. The intensity with which they see the world can often cause them to shut down. We are requesting a variety of items to stimulate different parts of the sensory room. This sensory room will provide a calming and safe place for our students to regulate their needs. This will allow for increased concentration in the classroom and improvement in motor planning, socialization and communication The lights will help calm the room from the bright lights in a normal classroom. The socks will help the compression they need to help them regain focus. The light music from the light machine will help ease them back into a calming focus.
