Writers workshop is a writing program that occurs daily in the classroom and supports students as they progress in their writing. During a writer's workshop session, students will participate in a mini lesson, independent writing time, conferring time, and time to share their writing. A unique aspect of writer's workshop is that students are given the opportunity to select the topic they write about. By allowing student choice of writing topics, they will become much more excited about writing and engaged in the writing process! The books listed are all mentor texts used in this writing program. These texts are read every day of the week. Each time it is read, students are focused on different elements of the text. For example, the text Scarecrow by Cynthia Rylant is a perfect text for exposing students to word choice. All of the mentor texts will support students to think critically about texts and grow as a writer when reflecting upon them. By having these texts in my classroom, I will be able to follow the curriculum and ensure that all of my students are meeting the Kindergarten standards and being exposed to the world of writing. It is important to have a strong writing program in place because good writers are also good readers. This writing program teaches students that writing is fun and exciting time during the day. It also pushes them to embrace mistakes while always trying their best. All students will be challenged to do their best writing through this differentiated writing program. All of these mentor texts teach students about different elements of writing. These texts are great ways to not only teach students, but engage them as well! With these texts, students will grow into strong writers that enjoy what they are doing.
