Our 5th grade classroom is a co-teach/double class with up to 48 students in one room at a time. Traditional desks and chairs will take up most of the space in the room and make students feel uncomfortable and cramped. My co-teacher and I truly feel that flexible seating will provide the best learning environment for our energetic students. Research shows that students learn best when they have some control over their environment. Allowing our students to choose their seating will increase their motivation and engagement. The bean bag and saucer chairs will be offered to students for comfort as they work and learn. This ergonomic furniture has been proven to relieve stress, prevent health problems related to incorrect seating posture, and to eliminate mental tension and depression. The exercise balls and balance disk will allow students (especially those with ADD and ADHD) greater flexibility in movement and improved posture. This will help increase their concentration and attention to detail. The movement these exercise materials will allow will increase alertness while at the same time discouraging students from disturbing classmates around them. The plastic stools will help tremendously during our teacher-led groups. Since we are a double class, there will be two small group tables in our room. The stools will allow the students that are sitting at the table more room and comfort. They will store nicely under the table when not in use, allowing more room in the classroom for movement. The large plastic bins will be used to store bookbags. The rugs will be used to seat children during the mini-lessons throughout the day. The furniture risers will be used to elevate tables to accommodate tall stools we already purchased. Thank you for your support in making this come true!
