I live in a small, rural community where there is little to no diversity at my school. I see the lack of understanding and empathy communities that are different from those of my students. This novel will assist my students on understanding what all humans have in common and how we can all come to understand each other. Because my students are starting to seriously prepare for life after high school, I plan to use this novel as a basis for discussion on ways students can empathize with the characters of the novel and the struggles they are going through. Students will also use this novel as a basis for deeper understanding when it comes to what it means to be human and how these issues are still very much prevalent in our current society. I want my students to forever be critical thinkers, and I believe studying this novel will be a meaningful stepping stone on their life-long journey of learning.
