I envision our makerspace being used for two distinct goals. First, I want my students to be able to try out maker activities that help build perseverance and life skills. Making things is a good way to give kids voice, choice, and a creative outlet. A broader vision is that I'd like my students to be able to choose to use making as a community service option. Whether sewing recycled dog toys for shelter pets or weaving paracord bracelets to include in soldier care packages, making can be a good way for kids to give back. For either of these pathways - making for oneself or making as a community service option - this gives my hands on learners a chance to shine. Many students, especially at the energetic elementary stages, are not that successful at the traditional school model of sitting still and doing work that is biased toward passive reading and writing. Hands on projects give these students an opportunity for success.
