Sight word knowledge helps build reading skills in first grade! My students use the Sight Word Daily Activity Journal to learn new words each week. Last year was the first year I used these journals and I was excited to see that my students were more engaged and almost all of my students are at 100% for first grade sight words! Some students who repeated first grade grew from 24 to 107 first grade words by adding the Sight Word Journal to our weekly routine. The Writing Journals are very helpful as students learn how to write answers to comprehension questions once they read. They can answer and illustrate using a writing prompt. Sight word knowledge helps build reading skills in first grade and that along with using the writing journals shows increases in reading and comprehension skills! The students use the writing journals to write using given prompts about the weekly story. We find they can easily learn to write/talk about what they are reading in the classroom.
