I chose two high-interest books, Prisoner B-3087 and Projekt 1065: A Novel of World War II, that will help my students understand that The Holocaust took place because individuals, groups, and nations made decisions to act or not to act. Focusing on those decisions will provide my students with insights into history and human nature, helping them to become compassionate and critical thinkers. All people are fundamentally the same; capable of great good and capable of great bad. Reading Holocaust literature will narrow the gap between the confines of small town Rustburg, Va., and open up a larger world in which students have more opportunities to connect. Please help my students develop tolerance and gain compassion.
