My goal is for my students to develop a love for reading. I want my students to be exposed to different genres of reading, to taste a bit of each genre and really find the style that they can connect to. I want my students to not be intimated by the length of a book. By reading novels with my students as a whole group, we can create a literacy rich environment that everyone can be engaged in. Students will participate in activities surrounding the novels, they will have discussions about the characters and how the story is developing. In previous years finding enough books for all my students to read together meant contacting other school libraries, my city library and searching second hand stores. Through this project I hope to be able to have enough for each of my students to hold the books, to turn the pages of the book, and to be able to reread sections they loved or take home if they need to catch up. I have watched a student after reading Number the Stars devour all of my historical fiction in a matter of weeks. By funding this project my students will be introduced to genres that they might not read from otherwise. Novel units are a great way to reach the whole student, through teaching, modeling, practicing their skills in reading, and in thinking about what they have read, skills that will transfer beyond ELA time in the classroom.
