When you come into my classroom it is easy to forget the challenges the first graders might be facing at home. On most days they are kind, smart and eager to help each other. Yet they go home to tough neighborhoods with a heavy gang presence and their parents often work multiple jobs. My purpose is to give them the best education possible so they can turn their neighborhoods around.
