With these books in our classroom library, students will be able to see themselves reflected in the books they read and be able to learn about people from diverse backgrounds. This will give students both mirrors and windows into the world, enabling them to self-reflect and read about lives different from their own as they discover their place in school and the world. Books are powerful tools for empowering students and building their confidence as well as encouraging compassion and empathy. I want my students to have the opportunity to encounter a variety of books during read-aloud and independent reading. Texts such as The Word Collector, We're All Wonders, and Girl Running celebrate and explore diverse people from across history and topics like persistence, friendship, acceptance, poverty, kindness, and more. With these books added to our classroom library, students will be able to grow as readers and as confident and compassionate world citizens!
