The historic coal mining "patch town" will bring to life the hardships and struggles that confronted the immigrant coal miners for my learners! My learners study the history of anthracite coal mining in Pennsylvania. In particular, they learn about the dangerous and unhealthy working conditions, the control of the mining companies over the lives of the miners, and the demands placed on the children of the coal miners, especially the young boys who entered the mines.
Exposure to an actual historic mining town will be an enriching and eye-opening experience that will impact both my learners' understanding and empathy! Learners will tour the "patch town", getting to go inside the homes of the different ranks of coal miners and actually see and hear how poorly they lived. They will see the coal breakers where the young "breaker boys" labored all day long, separating coal from rocks at a back-breaking speed. The learners will see the company-owned store where all families needed to buy everything. The blacksmith shop where the miners took their mining tools to be repaired and the company doctor's office are also a part of the tour. My learners will get to learn about how the typical coal mining family lived from their housing, clothing, and tools, to their poor working conditions and household implements and practices.
