Music learning including note reading and playing (literacy and performance benchmarks) and improvisation (creating and composing) will have more impact when students are able to apply these skills to a pitched instrument. Currently, the pitched instruments I use in general music are Orff instruments (xylophones and other mallet - style keyboard instruments) and soprano recorders. The soprano recorders that I have for the students are USED. Although they are regularly disinfected, I do not feel it is in the best interest of families and students to give "used recorders" during covid-19. The recorder will aid the students with a tangible way to apply their literacy, creating, and performance skills that they cannot (and likely for a while - will not until it is deemed safe - be able to do in class even as we return to hybrid or full time in-person learning). My desire in providing this instrument is to increase the amount of students who continue their education in the arts through music performance as they exit elementary and move on to middle school by providing this "gateway" instrument for them to hone their eye-hand coordination, excitement for performing and creating, pride in accomplishment, and music literacy skills.
