With thirty desks in my classroom and sometimes up to 30 fifth-grade bodies, things can get a little crowded! Utilizing all classroom space by introducing flexible seating would be a benefit to all. I am a big proponent of student choice; with flexible seating, students may choose how they best learn. Flexible seating will also encourage a sense of ownership and responsibility in students. Contracts will be provided so students know what the expectations are for flexible seating and when that privilege may be lost. I would love to provide flexible seating options for my students; things like wiggle seats, stools, and exercise balls can help students gain increased motivation, engagement, improved core strength, and posture; things we would not see with traditional seating. For example, I often find that I have students who prefer to stand to listen and do the task at hand instead of sit. With the stand-up collaboration desk on my wish list, students will be able to work while standing throughout class while not becoming a distraction.
