Our goal is for every classroom in our K-8 school to have a Building Resiliency Toolkit. We will provide the instruction to teachers and staff on how each toolkit should be utilized and under what conditions. This will enhance the teacher's ability to hone in on student's emotional needs, while giving every student equal access to the tools. By providing each class with a toolkit, we allow students the opportunity to self-regulate without having to leave the classroom. This, in turn, leads to less missed instruction and higher academic success. Along with a variety of calming tools, positive affirmation cards, and mindfulness strategies, each toolkit will include easy to read instructions on how to cope with a variety of emotions that distract our students from learning. If a student is angry they can squeeze a stress ball while deep breathing until all the glitter reaches the bottom of the bottle. If a student is anxious they can read positive affirmation cards while practicing deep breathing with a pinwheel. If a student is distracted they can practice mindful awareness or use a fidget to get back on task. Students and teachers will have an easy to use guide that will prompt them to label their emotion, identify the intensity of the emotion, and then lead them to the appropriate tool to use within the kit. With this being a school wide project, every student will have coping tools and strategies at their fingertips. Such as, a sand timer and pinwheel to practice timed deep breathing, a glitter bottle for mindful visualization, laminated color cards to non-verbally communicate needs, and a variety of fidgets to aid focusing. Every teacher, administrator and support services provider will be provided a toolkit (labeled clear plastic box) that consists of the guide and materials described above.
