My students attend an urban school in a low-income community. By and large, the district has not been able to update class libraries and order class sets for secondary English classes in years. Though many in the district understand the urgent need for contemporary books, the funding is not available to give students what they need. My students attend the most diverse school in the state, yet few have ever traveled outside the state and fewer still are equipped with the cultural knowledge to interact at large universities. This text will help prepare them to succeed in college by providing genuine descriptions of foreign cultures. They are motivated individuals with a genuine thirst for new experiences, and they are begging me to keep The Kite Runner as part of the curriculum!
