Teaching is a huge part of my life. This will be my fourth classroom in three years and I want my students to have the best year yet. The books donated will help my students see themselves within a book. I have requested a rug and books about children on the autism spectrum (A Boy Called Bat) children who come from all walks of life (Those Shoes) and so many books about our differences and how they make us wonderful (Amazing Grace).
My goal isn't to have students pass a test, it is to create a safe environment where my students can learn to be good people.
I started my career in first grade and a week into my first year was transferred to another school and grade. I never truly had the resources I needed for second grade and I promised myself that I would provide more for my students the following year.
I moved to fourth grade this past year and purchased hundreds of dollars worth of chapter books to engage my students. Recently, I was informed I would be traveling to my fourth classroom back to second grade. Grade-appropriate books are so important in these developmental years.
My incoming second graders will become wonderful people, with the guidance of these books. I need to help my students in so many ways this year, but most importantly I need to help them find diverse books that they can relate to, as well as imaginative books that will engage them. My students do not go home to a library of books, they need the support from their teacher and their community! These books will become a part of my daily lessons as read alouds and classroom discussions which will help to teach tolerance and inclusion.
