In second grade we go beyond reading leveled readers that come with our reading curriculum. It is imperative that each student is given the resources to develop their literacy independently. In Team 4, we spend each part of the day growing as readers; incorporating reading time, choice, and exploration as top priorities. Students need a classroom library with a variety of quality books to support their reading exploration. At the beginning of the year, we dive into literacy mini-lessons highlighting reader's habits. This growing reader's model expands into reading for understanding, discussing story elements, and partner book talks. By the last third of the year, students are well on their way to making choices for "good fit books". At the end of the year, every student is given the challenge to read 1-5 author or character series. What does a classroom need to grow readers? BOOKS! Because I am in my second year of teaching, I am still developing the classroom library. I source books from thrift stores, from library giveaways, and even from my own childhood collection, but I need your help to add contemporary as well as classic books to our collection. I have put together a wishlist of author and character series appropriate for the many levels of second-grade readers. The best part about showcasing series by the last part of the school year is second graders really have grown into independent readers with the focus and passion to read longer. A book series challenge is just the project to send them on their way to third grade.
