Each book on this list is specifically designated for a unit taught throughout the year. Mississippi Trial 1955 allows the students to see the Civil Rights movement through teenage eyes that they can relate to, along with seeing figurative language used in a historic fiction setting. The Hunger Games allows the students to see analogy and metaphor used in a creative way that they can analyze with modern comparisons. The Crucible is a modern literary work that gets students excited about how plays can be used to convey history. Okay For Now is a personal narrative that give students a glimpse into the tumultuous time of the Vietnam-War era America while helping them craft their own narrative. Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie is a telling Coming-Of-Age story that is particular about perspective and feelings in ways that the students can relate to. The library available to us is dated, whereas new material with a multicultural selection will enable the lessons to give the students a taste of adventure and excitement that they may not have had before.
