I plan to introduce a guitar/songwriting course for my middle school general music students. Students will learn to play the guitars that I am trying to get funded through DonorsChoose. I want to create a caring, supportive environment where students learn to read music, play guitar, and compose and record their own songs. My goal is to create a culture where students respect and support each other, and support each other's efforts toward expressing all of their emotions. I want my students to have skills for self-expression that they can carry forward into later adolescence and adulthood. It is vitally important that students learn to express themselves and their feelings, even uncomfortable feelings. Music and songwriting are ideal vehicles for exploring our feelings.

About my class
